Types of Water

Water is classified into two types:

First: Pure Water, which is water that retains the qualities that Allah has created it with, e.g. the water of springs, seas, rivers, rain etc.

Its Ruling: Purification can be achieved using such water.

Second: Impure Water, which is water whose colour, taste or smell has changed due to the mixing of impurity, either in small or in large quantity.

Its Ruling: Purification cannot be achieved using such water, and it is forbidden to be used for drinking, in food or otherwise.

Ruling About Water If Something Pure Gets Mixed With It

If something pure gets mixed with water, like saffron, tea, soap, ink, dust, etc. due to which water changes but does not transform to something else, it retains its purifying nature.

However, if the water transforms into something else, e.g., it becomes ink, tea or clay, then it cannot be used for purification, as it can no longer be called water.

  1. Assalaamu Alaykum Mr. Zuhair, I am quite confused with this:

If something pure gets mixed with water, like saffron, tea, soap, ink, dust, etc. due to which water changes but does not transform to something else, it retains its purifying nature.

Doesn’t the water change? And isn’t it impure?

By the way I was one of your students for a short while, I was the student who met you every first break on Sunday and Wednesday I think.

May Allah bless you Zuhair with knowlege.

    1. السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته
It’s a pleasure seeing you visit my blog. Of course, I remember you quite well, Rayan.
Now to answer your question. The rule is this: If any pure substance gets mixed with water in such a proportion that water is still dominant, it remains pure and retains its purifying nature. However, if the other substance gains dominance over water, e.g. mixing of mud in such a substantial quantity that water no longer remains water, the resulting mixture becomes clay, water in such a mixture still remains pure but loses its purifying nature. So remember, any pure substance mixing with water never renders it impure, it just takes away its purifying power if it gains dominance over water. والله تعالى أعلم
